The Texas State Veterans Home in Temple is named after William R. (Bill) Courtney who served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He rose from the rank of Private to First Lieutenant in the 10th Mountain Infantry Division stationed in Italy.

First Lieutenant Courtney’s dedication to civic affairs greatly contributed to Temple’s growth and prosperity throughout the years. He was a member of a pioneer Central Texas Family and he wholeheartedly supported the community’s goals and objectives. As a well-known and very highly respected attorney and a tireless civic worker with outstanding leadership abilities, First Lieutenant Courtney’s personal, professional and civic life was built on a foundation of integrity and service.

He personified excellence, duty, compassion and service. First Lieutenant Courtney’s dedication to serving others, his invaluable contributions to the Temple community and his love of life and spirit of giving will never be forgotten.
